Why PVC-free is important to Correct Building Products

Taking A Stand For Sustainability

Why PVC-free is important to Correct Building Products:
PVC, or polyvinyl chloride, is a plastic commonly used in consumer products including building supplies, cars, toys and other goods. Correct Building Products has never used PVC in its products, including the ultra-low maintenance CorrectDeck CX. Many global companies, including Nike, Honda, Ikea and Mattel are switching to alternatives to this plastic.

What does sustainability mean?
The term "sustainability" means meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

What are Sustainable Products?
Sustainable products are those products providing environmental, social and economic benefits while protecting public health, welfare, and environment over their full commercial cycle, from the extraction of raw materials to final disposition.

Reasons for being PVC-free include:
The chlorine-dependant production of PVC results in the release of dioxins and other toxins into the environment that create health risks including cancer and damage to the immune and reproductive systems.

Many types of PVC also contain phthalates, lead and cadmium, chemicals used to soften and stabilize the plastic. These are also known carcinogens.

In addition to the health risks and toxins released by its manufacture, PVC cannot be easily recycled. It is considered to be a contaminant to many existing recycling programs due to the chemicals in its composition. It cannot be incinerated for the same reasons – burning it releases dioxins and other toxins into the environment.

Marking all of our products with their resource content (60% wood fiber, 40% polypropylene) aids in cradle-to-cradle recycling.

Correct Building Products believes that every aspect of a product’s lifecycle should be as environmentally sustainable as possible, part of which includes being PVC-free.
